PLYMOUTH — Plymouth’s girls hung tough for a half, but the turnovers piled up in the second half, and the Lady Pilgrims took a 49-29 defeat at the hands of a tough Elkhart Memorial squad Saturday at The Rock.
AKRON — The Plymouth boys basketball team is living proof of the old saying “If you always do what you’ve always done, then you will always get what you’ve always got.”
Turnovers, poor shooting from the field and a late attempt at making a comeback failed the Pilgrims a second night in a row as it went down in defeat to the Tippecanoe Valley Vikings 54-43 Saturday night.

LAKEVILLE — With leading scorer Ethan Pike sitting out the game with family issues, Bremen’s offense struggled Friday night.
LaVille held the Lions to 11 of 33 from the field and their lowest points production of the season as the Lancers grabbed their first Northern State Conference win with a 45-27 defeat of the visiting Lions at Dale E. Cox Gymnasium.
ELKHART — The Plymouth boys basketball team has seen some good opposing guards this season already, but they may have seen one of the best Friday night.Â
Elkhart Memorial’s Todd Johnson was nearly unstoppable at Elkhart’s North Side Gym and the Pilgrims weren’t able to overcome an early deficit in a losing effort against the Chargers, 57-52.
Johnson finished the night with 33 points, making 12 of his 17 shots from the floor even with one and sometimes two Pilgrim defenders guarding him.
WALKERTON — Triton’s girls basketball team churned out a couple of big numbers that mitigated a small one Friday night.
The Class A No. 5 Trojans ripped down 26 offensive rebounds, forced 24 turnovers, and overcame a 26-percent performance from the field — 16 of 61 — en route to a 40-27 Northern State Conference win over John Glenn at The Aerie.
For the game, Triton, which snapped a three-game skid, piled up 20 second-chance points and 17 points off turnovers, while holding the Falcons to a mere 21 tries from the field.

PLYMOUTH — The annual Bridal Fair sponsored by Treat’s Bridal Shoppe and Squire Shop is this Saturday at Christos’ Banquet Center in Plymouth.
“We have a lot of newness in our vendors (this year),” said Gary Treat, owner. “There are a lot of new (trends) in bridal styles, and we will show those, as well as some prom styles.”

PLYMOUTH — This winter, try your hand at whipping up some proscuitto-wrapped asparagus or roasted salmon in one of Fitness Forum’s new cooking classes at the LifePlex. Held once a month beginning in January, these classes focus on creating delicious food that is also healthy. Chef Brad Hindsley, of Spire Catering and Event Planning in LaPorte, will join forces with Phyllis Wille, owner of the New Kitchen Store in Walkerton, to demonstrate easy skills that will help class participants create their own gourmet masterpieces.
PLYMOUTH — The first baby to be born this year at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Plymouth was Peyton Burdick, who was born at 10:21 a.m. New Year’s Day.
She weighed 7 pounds and 6 ounces. Her parents, Christine and Jeff Burdick of Walkerton, said that Peyton was originally due on Christmas Eve.
At the time, they didn’t put much thought into Peyton being the first baby of the new year.

PLYMOUTH — John F. Botset, 72, Plymouth, died at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2012.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra L. Dixon; daughter: Dawna (Blane) Embree of Plymouth; two sons: John W. (Sue) Botset of Rochester and Todd A. (Carrie) Botset of Walkerton, eight grandchildren, one great-granddaughter and several nieces and nephews.

GILMAN, Ill. — Arthur R. Haug Jr., 74, of Gilman, Ill., formerly of Plymouth, passed away Monday, Jan. 2, 2012 in Watseka, Ill. Mr. Haug was born in Chicago Oct. 5, 1937 to Arthur and Florence (Goze) Haug. At an early age, his family moved to Plymouth from Chicago. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving four years. He married Betty Miller Oct. 12, 1958 in Donaldson and together they raised two children.
