TIPPECANOE — Each year, the Marshall County Firefighters Association honors one member with a “Firefighter of the Year” award. Fire departments around the county are asked to recommend one individual who has carried out his or her duties exceptionally that year. Nominees for 2011 were Matt Rupert from LaPaz and Ed Marquardt from Plymouth.
LaVille fans clap for their team during a Northern State Conference home game in December.
PLYMOUTH — Long after the last event had ended, Plymouth’s swimmers were still splashing around in the pool.
They might have been reluctant to leave the water in the last meet at the site, scheduled to close at the end of March. Or they might only have been caught up in the Senior Night celebration.

PLYMOUTH — Building contractors in the area will have the opportunity to attend an free informational session next Wednesday, where speakers from several different associations will present new and updated guidance for those in the field.
This is the first such event to be held by the county, said Marshall County building inspector Chuck DeWitt.
“Being new to the job, I just kind of listened to areas we had problems with,” said DeWitt. “Usually things we have problems with are (because of a) lack of education and knowledge about what needs to be done, not malice.”
Pet of the Week can be found under Photo of the Week in the Entertainment section of the website.
IU Health Starke Hospital, 102 E. Culver Road, Knox, will host an American Red Cross blood drive from 11 a.m to 3 p.m. CST Thursday, Jan. 19. To schedule an appointment to donate please call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org for more information.

CULVER — Six-member modern dance group Body Vox, based in Portland, Oregon, wowed their audience Tuesday evening at Culver Academies as they performed acrobatic feats, surprising dance moves, and spunky steps riddled with personality.
“We are a unique blend of all different kinds of physical movements and theatrical effects,” said Body Vox choreographer Ashley Roland. “If you’ve never seen dance before we are a good group to see.”

HAMLET — Jesse Avarone returned to form for Oregon-Davis Wednesday, and the Lady Cats were glad to have her back.
The sophomore combo player put up a game-high 26 points with three steals and seven rebounds in her second game back with a jammed finger after seeing limited action in a game in Chicago Saturday, and her performance helped lift the Class A No. 4 Cats to a 69-56 victory over visiting New Prairie in a weather-postponed Bi-County opener at The Den.
OD advances to play Bremen tonight in the Bi-County semifinals at 6:30 p.m. EST at LaVille.
