Talk of the town: Plymouth wins classic at Concord

September 29, 2012

DUNLAP — In a game that saw plenty of offense, it will be two defensive plays that are the talk of the town this week as Plymouth came away with an essential road win over Northern Lakes Conference foe Concord 31-28 Friday night.
After Plymouth quarterback Ike Kastner plunged over from 6 yards out at the 7:49 mark in the fourth quarter for what would prove to be the winning touchdown, it would take two big time defensive plays to preserve that win.

Pilgrims win 16th straight tennis title

September 29, 2012

BREMEN — With 15 straight championships, it' would be easy to start to start taking Plymouth's sectional ascendancy for granted.
But there was nothing preordained about the Pilgrims' title win Friday evening, as the host Lions gave them all they could handle before succumbing 4-1 in Plymouth's 16th-straight tennis sectional championship at DeSantis Courts.

Trojans down LV for 1st win

September 29, 2012

LAKEVILLE — Triton looked a bit like a defensive unit conducting an experiment as to whether hitting football carriers high or low yields better results.
Not surprisingly to anyone who’s ever muddled through a physics course, low works best.
After hitting high and surrendering 147 total yards to LaVille in the first half, the Trojans regrouped and allowed just 35 yards and two first downs after the intermission en route to a 21-10 Northern State Conference win — Triton’s first of the season — at Lancer Field Friday.

Zellmer leads Lions in triumphal return

September 29, 2012

BREMEN — It was Homecoming Night for the entire Bremen football team, but one senior in particular had a very special homecoming Friday night.
Tailback Reid Zellmer returned from a four-week hiatus recovering from a broken collarbone, and the 6-foot, 176-pound upperclassman rumbled for 269 yards and two touchdowns in 27 carries in a gutsy performance as Bremen held off Knox 21-14 at Don Bunge Field.

CMA ‘D’ drops Busco

September 29, 2012

CULVER — The Culver Military Academy defense came up big as it forced four turnovers in a battle against Class 2A Churubusco Friday night.
Busco came into the game undefeated at 6-0, but came up empty as the CMA Eagles defense held it to only two scores, a feat that Coach Andy Dorrel was very pleased with during his team’s 35-16 victory.

JG falls at New Prairie

September 29, 2012

NEW CARLISLE – How’s that old football saying go? “The battle is won in the trenches?”
John Glenn’s defensive line has been pretty good in trench warfare this season. But New Prairie’s offensive line has been even better.
That’s a big reason why the turnaround Cougars are 6-1 under first-year coach Russ Radtke. And it’s the main reason why New Prairie whipped the Falcons, 41-14, Friday night at Amzie Miller field.

Oldham remains critical but stable after blaze

September 28, 2012

The Thursday morning fire that left Jason Oldham of Tippecanoe critically injured was caused by a malfunction in the home, according to Tippecanoe fire captain Mike Walters.
“We did determine the cause, the source of the fire was from the utility room,” said Walters Friday. “It wasn’t criminal at all. It was a malfunction of something in the home.”
Walters, who lives nearby the Oldham’s former home, said that he had heard from family members that Oldham was still in serious condition.

Future of Culver’s town hall: renovate or move?

September 28, 2012

To stay or not to stay was the question of the hour at a Culver town council work session centering on the condition and fate of the town hall, among other topics.

"This building is falling apart," said town manager Dave Schoeff at the early September meeting. "I think we all know that. I wanted to hear from the council about how they feel and what direction we should go."
