ELKHART — Kenneth Dale Erickson, 88, of Elkhart, died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2012 at the Elkhart Hospice House.
He is survived by his wife, Estel; two sons, Keith (Christine) Erickson of Bremen and Robert Erickson of Plymouth; a daughter, Kathleen (Dennis) Neff of Goshen; four stepchildren; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held Monday, Aug. 6, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at Mishler Funeral Home, Bremen. Burial with military honors will follow at the Bremen Cemetery.

Post 27 bows out at state tournament

PLYMOUTH — After a 13-inning heartbreaker against Terre Haute Thursday night, the Diamond Spyders didn’t appear to have much left in the tank for Lafayette Post 11.
Plymouth Post 27’s defense committed six errors, and the team’s pitching staff — which it cobbled together from six different pitchers — gave up three runs off wild pitches and a balk and six walks with four hit batters in a 10-7 season-ending loss to Post 11 at the American Legion State Tournament Friday night at Bill Nixon Field.

Plymouth places 3rd at Goshen Invite
Plymouth’s girls golf team placed third one stroke behind second-place NorthWood with a 375, while Dekalb won the Goshen Invitational at Maplecrest Country Club Friday.
Heidi Morganthaler shot the individual low with a 79 for NorthWood.
Plymouth was led by dual 87s from Emily Berger and Lauren Rearick. Emily Denny shot a 100, Morgan Oberley shot a 101, and Kelly Henderson carded a 109 for the round.

LaPaz postmaster retires after 30 years
LAPAZ —Regina Davenport’s career with the U.S. Postal Service began shortly after high school with her first job at the Mishawaka Post Office in 1982. Today, seven postal positions later, Davenport is retiring from a job that she loves.

Health Dept. issues vaccine reminder

MARSHALL CO. — Although vaccine eligibility requirements changed in February of this year, Marshall County Health Department nurse Susan Lechlitner said some county residents are not aware of the change.
“Our phones have just started to ring for school because parents are realizing that it’s August already,” said Lechlitner.
Lechlitner and her staff have had to turn away several people because they no longer qualify for vaccinations at the health department due to the new requirements.

Post 27 falls in 13 innings to Porter County in state opener

PLYMOUTH — After a somewhat lackluster performance in the regional semifinals, Plymouth Post 27’s coaching staff was hoping to see a spark from its players at state.
The Diamond Spyders delivered, going blow for blow with regional champ Porter County for 12 innings, but in the end they fell just a little short in a 5-4, 13-inning heartbreaker in the two teams’ American Legion State Tournament opener at Bill Nixon Field Thursday.
