PHS will stream Morgan's race Friday

August 9, 2012

PLYMOUTH — Plymouth Community School Corporation Superintendent Dan Tyree said Thursday that Morgan Uceny's final run in the London Olympics will be streamed live at Plymouth High School Friday afternoon. All fans are invited to be a part of this once-in-a-lifetime event. Park in the north parking lot and enter the main northern doors. Doors open at 3 p.m., the race begins at 3:55 p.m.

Coroner rules on Sunday boating fatality

PLYMOUTH — Marshall County Coroner Bill Cleavenger said Thursday that alcohol was not a factor in Sunday's boating accident that killed Roger R. Martin, 61, of Chicago.
The incident, which occurred in the early evening on Lake Latonka in Plymouth, is still under investigation. Martin fell from a ski boat as it was making a sharp turn and was run over by the boat. The boat was driven by a family member.

History of Culver fires, firefighting Aug. 25

"Culver in Flames," a visual history of fires and firefighters of Culver's past, will take place Saturday, Aug. 25, starting at 10 a.m., at the Culver-Union Twp. fire station, 508 E. Lake Shore Drive.

The program is part of the August meeting of the Antiquarian and Historical Society of Culver, which at the event will also recognize the fire department -- which first incorporated here in 1903 -- for its more than 100 years of life-saving service to the community.

Argos woman works on 'bucket list'

PLYMOUTH — Longtime Marshall County resident and former Argos Jr./Sr. High School home economics teacher Carol Schmidlapp celebrated her 80th birthday Tuesday among family and friends — while also jumping out of an airplane flying at 10,000 feet.
“It’s on my bucket list,” explained Schmidlapp at Plymouth Sky Sports, as staff helped her into a harness and parachute. “I went up on a power parachute for my 75th birthday, so I thought the next thing is to go up and get pushed out of an airplane.”

PCSC will contract bus maintenance

PLYMOUTH — The Plymouth School Board voted unanimously Tuesday night to proceed with a contract for bus maintenance with Wiers. Discussions have been ongoing for several months on the possibility of closing the bus garage currently manned by PCSC employees and utilizing the services of Wiers.
Wiers will provide routine maintenance on the school’s fleet of buses as well as provide documentation of service work performed. Speaking on behalf of his company, Tom Wiers said they have adopted a philosophy of Stephen Covey to have a “win-win or no deal approach.”

Uceny reaches Olympic finals

Warming up for her 1,500-meter semifinal Wednesday at the London Olympics, Morgan Uceny was overtaken by a swarm of flying ants that descended upon the Track & Field stadium.
Fortunately, Morgan is not one to be easily distracted.
“Maybe on the warmup track I was eating some bugs, but I didn’t notice it in the race at all,” Uceny told an Associated Press reporter afterwards. “You are in the zone then. There could have been an earthquake, and I’d have no idea.”

PHS announces Ryan Wolfe as new head baseball coach

PLYMOUTH — Plymouth High School has officially named Ryan Wolfe as its new head baseball coach. Wolfe becomes just the third head baseball coach at Plymouth since 1970.
Wolfe makes the move from JV coach at Rochester to head coach of the Pilgrims. He will also teach social studies at PHS and says he was as attracted to the teaching environment at Plymouth as he was the baseball program.
