ROCHESTER — Arthur Thorn Sr., 68, of Rochester died at 11:20 a.m. Tuesday, July 31, 2012 at Visiting Nurses and Hospice Home of Fort Wayne.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret; three daughters Tina (Jesus) Gonzeles of Rochester, Melissa (Zach) Burr of Ft. Wayne, Haley (Josh) Ruiz of Plymouth; two sons, Arthur (Jennifer) Thorn Jr. of Argos, Thomas Thorn of Rochester; 11 grandchildren; and two brothers, Jimmy (Diane) Thorn of Chicago, Ill., William (Maxine) Thorn of Peru.

ROCHESTER — Kenneth Eugene Brown, 83, of Rochester died at Hickory Creek of Rochester Sunday, Aug. 5, 2012.
He is survived by his sister, Grace Marie Miller, Rochester; two brothers, Max (Deloris) Brown of Claypool, John (Neva) Brown of Russell, Ky.
Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 9 at the Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester. Burial will follow at the Crown Point Cemetery near Kokomo. Memorials may be made to the Northern Indiana Community Foundation. Condolences may be made at www.goodfamilyfh.com
John T. Drang

CULVER — John T. Drang, 71, of Culver passed away at 11:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3, 2012 at Miller’s Merry Manor in Culver.
John was born March 24, 1941 in Chicago, Ill. to Frank and Agnes (Marshall) Drang. He grew up in Ora. He graduated from Monterey High School in 1960. April 7, 1962, John married the love of his life, Rochelle “Shelly” Good at the Burr Oak Church of God. They celebrated 50 years together this year during which they raised three children.

WAKARUSA — Leona E. Blad, 89, Wakarusa, formerly of Plymouth, died at 8:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 6, 2012 at Miller’s Merry Manor, Wakarusa. She was born March 2, 1923 in Plymouth to Clint and Teresa (Young) Beldon. She married Herbert Wolff March 30, 1974 and he died Sept. 13, 1989, then she married Melvin Blad Oct. 22, 1991.
It may have been fitting that, amidst the fast-paced hubbub of the July 20 weekend -- marked by the Lake Fest and celebration of Culver's Woodcraft Camp's centennial -- a beloved local teacher whose own manner was quiet and subdued, but markedly impactful, was honored at the Culver-Union Twp. Public Library.
Specifically, the Rita Lawson Science Fiction and Fantasy Collection was dedicated July 21 at the library, bearing the namesake of the late longtime Culver Community School teacher and library board member, who passed away in December, 2010.

BREMEN — A group of about 25 concerned mothers met at Sunnsyide park last Thursday to share their opinions about the rumor going around that Bremen Elementary School was eliminating recess for its students.
Two of the parents, Deanna Stiles and Jessica Flores (who organized the meeting) shared their feelings at the meetings onset. “We’re not here for a gripe-fest about a bunch of topics,” explained Flores. “Our purpose here is to find out the truth.” Present at the gathering (which ironically was held at the playground) was Bremen Elementary-Middle School Principal Larry Yelaska.

MARSHALL CO. — Deep in storage in the Marshall County Building are records relating to property and road changes, as well as commissioner meeting minutes dating back to the inception of Marshall County in 1836. All the county records are kept in one place, and there are no backups.
“Some of these are handwritten,” pointed out county auditor Penny Lukenbill, holding a book of records dated 1844. “These are irreplaceable documents.”

PLYMOUTH — Laura Mann was sworn in as a new Plymouth Park Department board member Monday evening during the board’s regularly scheduled meeting. Mann is replacing Ted Brown, who resigned. Her term will end December 2014.
“I have two children who have used the park all their lives,” said Mann following the meeting. “I want to see (the park) continue to be well maintained, flourish and grow.”
Mann said that she is excited about the new River Park Square, the all-inclusive park being planned by Anthony Gamble, and in general, “more opportunities for residents of the city.”
PLYMOUTH — Last week was a big homecoming week for Plymouth athletes as many made the trip home for Alumni Week activities.
For the second year, the Plymouth Alumni Association sponsored special alumni games and events to go along with the Big Red Ladies Open, the Art Thomas Big Red Open and the all-class cocktail party that have become staples over the years during the first weekend of August.

at New Prairie Invite
Plymouth finished runner-up at the New Prairie Invitational with a 345 team score behind invite champion Chesterton’s 324 at Legacy Hills Tuesday.
The Lady Pilgrims were led by Lauren Rearick’s 83 and Emily Berger’s 84.
Lauren Read paced LaVille — which finished ninth at the meet with a 394 — with a score of 88, while NorthWood, which placed fourth with a 359, was led by Morgan Theler’s strong round of 77 and Kate Adams’ 88.
John Glenn finished 12th with a 420, Bremen was 14th with a 429, and Triton was 16th with a 445.
