BREMEN — Janet L. (Hons) Erickson, 68, of Bremen, died Sunday, Aug. 12, 2012, at 4:30 p.m., at her home.
She is survived by her husband, Bernie Erickson; daughters, Dawn (Mark) Galloway of Culver, Jennifer Erickson of Denver, Colo.; sons, Greg (Kelley) Erickson of Plymouth, Chris (Veda) Erickson of Plymouth; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and her sister, Sandy Swenson of California.
Visitation will be Thursday, Aug. 16, 2012, from 5 to 6:30 p.m., at the Plymouth Wesleyan Church, 11203 S. Michigan Road, Plymouth.

She was born May 16, 1963, in Gary, to Tom and Dottie Goulden Lackey.

MESA, Ariz. — Richard Allen Rowe of Mesa, Ariz. and formerly of Tippecanoe passed away Monday, Aug. 13, 2012 at 6:24 a.m. at Lutheran Hospital of Fort Wayne at the age of 69.
He was born May 4, 1943 in South Bend to the late Irene (Balmer) and Carel Rowe. In 1963 he was married to Carol Mowiser, who survives.

CULVER — Cecil E. Lucas, 85, of Culver died Aug. 11, 2012 at Ironwood Health & Rehabilitation, South Bend.
He is survived by a son, Kurt O. Lucas of Culver; daughter, Karen Sue Lucas of South Bend; brothers, Carl E. Lucas of North Judson, Paul E. Lucas of Speedway; sister, Carmen Benes of Plainfield; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.

ROCHESTER — David Paul Frettinger, 84, of Rochester died at 11:15 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 12, 2012 at home.

City K-9 officer Rex will enter retirement

PLYMOUTH — After a distinguished career, Plymouth’s K9 officer Rex will enter retirement.
Plymouth Police Chief Jim Cox made the announcement to the Plymouth Board of Public Works and Safety in their regular meeting. Cox gave the Board the bad news that health was the reason for Rex’s retirement stating that the K9 officer was having difficulty with his eyesight, rear legs and hips and possibly had cancer.
The department will seek a home for Rex unless it is determined that he has cancer.

West Nile Virus detected in county

MARSHALL CO. — The Marshall County Health Dept. reported Monday that the level of West Nile Virus (WNV) transmission has continued to increase in Indiana. There are now both human and equine cases, and this trend is expected to continue. The Indiana State Department of Health reports that the following 62 counties have had mosquitoes test positive for WNV this year.

DEMOTTE — The Argos girls soccer team came back from a 0-3 hole to earn a draw with Kankakee Valley in the opener for both squads in DeMotte Tuesday.
Haley Cox’s corner kick was not cleared by Argos, and Stephanie Scally found the ball at her foot and put the hosts on the board in the 28th minute. With under two minutes to play in the first half, Haleigh Wenglarz scored on a long ball from Ivy Fase and the Kougars grabbed a 2-0 edge at the intermission.

Plymouth falls in 4 in opener at LaPorte
Plymouth’s volleyball team lost its opener on the road to perennial power LaPorte Tuesday in four close sets, 25-22, 20-25, 25-13, 25-23.
Marissa German played a balanced match for the Lady Pilgrims with 12 kills and eight digs, while Andria Shook finished with nine kills and four aces. Amber Redinger put away nine kills with three blocks. Haley Harrell led the team in setting with 25 assists on the night.

Nearly 250 participate in triathlon

CULVER — A total of 246 people participated in the Lake Max Triathlon on Saturday.
Jacob Bingham, 19, was the overall winner with a time of 52 minutes, 56.7 seconds for the course.Jennifer Zimmer, 35, was the overall women’s winner with a time of 1:05:16.2, good for 14th place overall.
The triathletes were tested by a course featuring a 400-meter swim in Lake Maxinkuckee, a 10-mile bike ride around the lake and a five-kilometer (3.1 miles) run along the lake. There were 183 individual participants and another 63 involved with men’s, women’s and co-ed teams.
