Culver hockey tradition carried on by family of players

Culver’s incredible hockey legacy is sometimes over­looked or even taken for granted, so frequent are state championship titles won (21 so far) and so many are the Culver Academies graduates who made their way to the NHL.

But one whole Culver family has had remarkable suc­cess on the ice: that of Academies advancement officer Kevin Kucera, two of whose sons have garnered attention at the collegiate level for their hockey success, and whose youngest son is already poised to follow in their footsteps.

Extra millions from state will be placed in new fund

MARSHALL CO. — Earlier this year, Indiana counties learned that a mistake by the Indiana Department of Revenue had cost them several million dollars in missing funds. Although the individual counties were reimbursed, it was unclear if the money could be spent.
Marshall County Auditor Penny Lukenbill informed county council members Monday that she had received direction from the state on the lump sum of reimbursement funds, which totals $2.8 million for this year for Marshall County.

Council denies Sheriff's request to hire captain

MARSHALL CO. — Marshall County council members Monday denied Sheriff Tom Chamberlin’s request to hire a captain for his department.
Chamberlin explained that his current chief deputy — hired in May 2011 — would be leaving the department effective September 14. He requested the council’s permission to hire a captain to replace the chief deputy, which would require a change to the salary ordinance.

Argos’ Stults delivers lights-out pitching performance as Padres roll vs Braves

ATLANTA (AP) — San Diego manager Bud Black called Eric Stults’ performance classic pitching.
The Atlanta Braves called it frustrating.
Stults, and Argos native and standout at Bethel College, combined with two relievers on a five-hitter, Chase Headley homered and drove in two runs and the Padres beat Atlanta 4-1 on Monday night.
Stults (3-2) gave up five hits and one run in 7 2-3 innings — his longest start in three years. While with the Dodgers, Stults beat the Giants 8-0 on May 9, 2009, his last complete game.

Boys tennis
Plymouth opens with loss at Kokomo
Plymouth’s boys tennis team opened its season with a 4-1 defeat on the road at Kokomo Monday.
The Pilgrims’ lone win came at 1 singles, where Gabe Vervynckt started off his senior season with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Craig Simon.
On the 1 singles court, meanwhile, Matt Flynn and Kendall Fosler extended Kokomo’s Andrew Schten and Joe Farkas to 13 games in both sets but fell in two tiebreakers, 7-5 and 7-1.
Plymouth’s next match is Thursday as the Pilgrims host Northern Lakes Conference foe Wawasee at 4:45 p.m.
