WTCA teams up with Rockies for auction

PLYMOUTH — As summer winds down the football season winds up, and the whistle of two-a-days means it’s time for WTCA-AM 1050 and the Plymouth Rockies to hold their annual auction.
This is the third year for the event that raises money for the football program at Plymouth High School. The auction will be live on WTCA from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday.
“Last year we were able to raise $8,000 and we’ve set our goal to raise $10,000 this year,” said Tonda Ellis, who is coordinating the auction for the team. “A lot of people have donated some very nice items for us to auction off.”

Rice earns highest medals for piano

PLYMOUTH — Korie Rice of Plymouth earned the highest awards for 2012 of the 47 piano students of the Clara Woolley Music Studio who participated in the National Guild of Piano Playing Auditions held recently at Ancilla College, Donaldson Rice, 15, was awarded the Sonatina Medal, Founder’s Medal, International Pin and Composer’s Pin at one of the Studio’s two May piano recitals, in the Ancilla Domini Chapel.

PLYMOUTH — Kenneth “Kenny” Earl Menzie Sr., 90, of Plymouth passed away July 30, 2012 at 1:37 p.m. at his residence following a sudden illness.
He was born Jan. 26, 1922 in Warsaw to Elmer A. and Goldie (Mason) Menzie.
He lived in Plymouth since November of 1996 coming from Mentone where he had been a resident since 1954.
He married Leatha (Barkman) Menzie Feb. 12, 1954 in Mentone; she preceded him in death in August, 1996.
He worked as a clerk/agent for the Norfolk & Southern Railroad for 35 years, retiring in 1980.

KEENE, N.H. — Robert W. Mallory, 87, formerly of Naugatuck, Conn., died Wednesday, June 13, 2012, at Bentley Commons Senior Living Facility in Keene, N.H. He was the husband of the late Mary E. (Stover) Mallory. Robert was born Aug. 20, 1924, in Detroit, Mich., son of the late Willis B. Mallory and Edith G. (Spencer) Mallory.

BREMEN — Luella “Polly” A. Anderson, 86, of Bremen, passed away Sunday, July 29, 2012 at IU Health Goshen. She was born Dec. 14, 1925 to Nelson and Lula (Reese) Marks in Plymouth. Luella married Paul E. Miller Jan. 25, 1945 in Bremen; he passed away Dec. 10, 1986. She later married James Anderson May 18, 1991 at the Salem United Methodist Church in Bremen; he survives.

PLYMOUTH – Lila J. “Pearlie” Wallace, 86, a Ferndale Avenue resident of Plymouth, passed away Thursday evening at 5:40 p.m. in the Elkhart Hospice House.
Lila was born Aug. 6, 1925 in South Bend, the daughter of Thomas and Eva Jane (Edgerton) Fakos. She graduated from Central High School with the class of 1943.
April 28, 1946 in South Bend, she became the bride of Robert J. Wallace. At the age of 40 he preceded her in death Aug. 27, 1967.

NAPPANEE — Robert D. Hamman, 75, of Nappanee, died Friday, July 27, at Elkhart General Hospital Emergency Room from natural causes.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy; five children, Timothy S. (Di) Hamman of Eastlake, Ohio; Kelly Sutton of Nappanee; Rodney D. (Sherrill) Hamman of Mentone; Kina (Tom) Hinz of Plymouth; and Kela (Jimmy Faulkner) Hamman-Runnells of Warsaw; 13 grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

PLYMOUTH — Big boys (and girls) and their “toys” turned out to strut their stuff while helping the Boys & Girls Club of Marshall County last Saturday at the third annual P-town Car-B-Q Showdown, held behind Oliver Ford Lincoln in Plymouth. The total collected for the charity is still being calculated at this time.
A car/truck/motorcycle show headlined the event with 82 vehicles spit-shined to their very brightest to help raise funds for the charity, and several more coming to “just hang out.”

Plymouth golfer Bennett signs with Ancilla

PLYMOUTH — Plymouth High School graduate Cody Bennett recently signed his Letter of Intent to play golf for Ancilla College in the 2012-2013 season.
Bennett earned two varsity letters in golf at Plymouth High School under coach Ben Waymouth before enrolling at Ancilla this fall.
“It is close to home,” said Bennett. “I also have the opportunity to play college golf.”
“Cody is a great fit for our team,” said Ancilla head golf coach Marc Hayden. “He has a lot in common with the incoming class, and I like that he wants to compete.”
