American Legion Regional rescheduled

July 27, 2012

PLYMOUTH — The American Legion Baseball Regional tournament was rescheduled Friday.
Plymouth will now play Mishawaka Post 161 at 1 p.m. Saturday at Bill Nixon Field following a 10 a.m. game between South Bend Post 50 and Valparaiso Post 94/170.
The winners will play at 4 p.m. and the losers will play at 7 p.m.

1st Lake Fest canoe-kayak-SUP poker run deemed a success

CULVER — The first annual Canoe, Kayak.& SUP Poker Run was a great success, according to co-organizer Kathy Clark, director of the Lake Maxinkuckee Environmental Council.
In all, 41 people signed up to participate, bringing their favorite self-propelled watercraft for some fun competition with friends, family and neighbors, including one participant’s handmade, wooden kayak.

PHS alum Barron named USA South Academic All-Conference

STAUNTON, Virg. — Plymouth graduate Meagan Barron was recently named to the USA South Academic All-Conference Tennis Team as a freshman at Mary Baldwin College. She was one of 851 athletes to earn the honor this season.
Barron, a 2011 graduate of Plymouth High School, is a three-sport athlete with the Fighting Squirrels participating in volleyball, basketball and tennis. She was the college’s 2011-12 Rookie of the Year and was named Most Competitive on her tennis team on her way to all-conference honorable mention.

Gurtner takes 8th at Mountain Dew Junior Tour championship
LaVille golfer Zach Gurtner tied for eighth in his division at the Mountain Dew Junior Golf Tour Championship Friday at Harrison Hills Golf Club in Attica.
Gurtner shot a 4-over-par 76 to finish in a two-way tie for eighth in the Boys 15-16 competition while friend and Northern State Conference competitor Tyler Prentkowski shot a 13-over 85 to finish in a tie for 18th place in the division.

CALUMET — After a banner junior basketball season, 2009 Plymouth High School graduate Alexandria Starr was named Purdue University Calumet’s Student Athlete of the Year for 2011-12.

Plymouth’s Peters performs in IHSBCA North-South series

JASPER — Plymouth High School graduate and Ancilla College signee Chase Peters participated in the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association’s 38th annual North-South All-Star Series at Alvin C. Ruxer Field in Jasper July 14-15.
Peters finished 3-for-6 at the plate with two stolen bases as his North team went 2-1 against the South squad at the series, winning 4-3 and 14-10 in the doubleheader July 14 and falling by a close 2-1 margin in the wooden bat game July 15.

Maxinkuckee Players summer of 2012 musical "Crazy for You", a romantic comedy filled with Gershwin music, will be at the Culver Community High School auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Sale continues
The annual rummage sale at St. Michael Church basement sponsored by Marshall County Right to Life will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, and 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday.

Lenne, Langdon finish RAIN ride

PLYMOUTH — Two local bicycling enthusiasts were among the more than 1,000 competitors finishing a grueling 160-mile one-day ride Saturday.
Plymouth’s Tony Lenne and Bill Langdon began the RAIN (Ride Across Indiana) ride starting in Terre Haute finishing in Richmond. The annual event is sponsored by the Bloomington Bicycle Club.
This was Lenne’s second attempt to complete the ride. Last year he reached the 120 mile-mark before dropping out for what he now believes was dehydration.
“I signed up again after my younger brother challenged me,” he said.

Panel explains new ban, offers tips

PLYMOUTH — The Marshall County Health Department hosted a public meeting Tuesday evening to answer questions county residents might have on the statewide ban on smoking in public places and places of employment, which has been in effect since July 1. The meeting was held in the Marshall County Building and those interested were invited to ask questions of a panel that included Sandy Read, Marshall County Health Educator; Rachelle Back, Indiana State Department of Health representative, and Javier Arroyo, excise officer.
