CBGC auction shines for youths' brighter future

The committee behind the Culver Boys & Girls Club's annual auction and dinner event is recuperating after another evening of sparkling and convivial success -- to the tune of some $44,000 and counting raised for the club, according to committee chair Ginny Munroe.

Held Friday evening at the Culver Academies' Lay Dining Center, festively decorated for the occasion, and catered by the dining hall itself -- under the direction of Lee Wilhite and head chef Larry Surrisi -- the event was attended by some 200 area residents under the theme of "Building Brighter Futures."

SOUTH BEND — Terry Jay Rosander, 51, of South Bend, formerly of Grovertown, born Oct. 7, 1960 to Kathleen and Delbert Rosander, died peacefully in his sleep surrounded by his sisters and brother after a long struggle with the residual effects of a traumatic brain injury sustained in 1991.

BREMEN — James Michael Cherrone Jr., 23, of Bremen, died Saturday, June 16, 2012 at South Bend Memorial Hospital.
He is survived by his parents, James Michael Cherrone Sr. and Melody Cherrone of Bremen; two brothers, Joshuah James Cherrone and Nicholas (Courtney) Cherrone; and a sister, Windie Ellen Cherrone.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, June 21, 2012 at 10 a.m. at Horizon Ministries in Bremen.
Visitation is at the church Wednesday, June 20, 2012 from 4 to 8 p.m.

Burn ban remains in place for county; GIS requirements for salary match discussed

PLYMOUTH — For years Marshall County has taken advantage of a state program that allows the county to receive a 50 percent match for Emergency Management Agency Director Clyde Avery’s salary.
As long as the county met a certain point total on the state’s preparedness guidelines and Avery has continued to meet the standards set for his profession by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) — which the county and Avery have exceeded — then the state would pay half of Avery’s salary.

LDA shows variety through decades

BREMEN — Variety was the spice of everyone’s life Saturday night as the LifePlex Dance Academy presented its annual recital “Dancing through the Decades.”
Held in the Bowen auditorium at Bremen High School, the program involved child, youth, and adult dancers as well as professional dance teachers, highlighting the wide variety of dance instruction offered by the school.

Post 27 feeling fatigue in loss

FORT WAYNE — Plymouth Post 27 played its sixth game in five days, and some fatigue may have shown in its 9-5 loss to the Ohio River Bandits in Fort Wayne’s Parkview Stadium Monday.
Plymouth jumped out to an early lead in the first.
Brock Anson led off the game with a walk. James Hackworth sacrificed him to second, and Brody Andrews doubled down the left field line to score Anson. Brody scored a moment later when brother Tanner singled to put the Diamond Spyders up 2-0.

Artists to be celebrated June 30

LAPAZ — The Briar Patch in LaPaz will hold its fourth annual folk art show and sale Saturday, June 30. About 15 vendors will have their work displayed, and items include vintage, handcrafted, and antique items.
"For the last four years we have held this show in an attempt to showcase local artisans and encourage folks to visit Marshall County", said Phyllis Horvath owner of The Briar Patch. "I believe that small hometown festivals are making a comeback, folks crave the Mayberry days of wandering around the 'county fair' and seeing what their neighbors have to offer."

Plymouth alums celebrate at annual banquet

PLYMOUTH - Literally hundreds of Plymouth Alumni began the reunion season with the largest celebration of Plymouth grads of the year at the annual Plymouth Alumni Association Alumni Banquet.
As one of the highlights of the evening the Association welcomed Suellen Glaub Long and Dr. Robert O. Vore and posthumously Dr. Arthur Becknell Jr., into the Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame and celebrated the PHS class of 1962 as part of their 50th class reunion. As part of the celebration Pat Felke spoke on behalf of Plymouth’s latest graduating class of 2012.
