Financial aid night for high school students is Wednesday

The annual Plymouth High School Financial Aid Night will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the school cafeteria. This is an important meeting for seniors and their parents to attend. Information will be provided on available sources of financial assistance and the most effective method of applying for them. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) will be discussed in detail. All students and parents from area high schools are invited to attend.

Councilmen take oaths of office

PLYMOUTH — The Plymouth Common Council has three new members, but all three are familiar faces from the community.
Shawn Grobe, Duane Culp and Don Ecker along with returning members Mike Delp and Wayne Smith were officially sworn in Monday night by Judge Dean Colvin.
Grobe and Ecker have been serving on the Redevelopment Commission and Culp is a long-time officer with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department.
The council elected Mike Delp as President Pro-Tempore on a vote of 4-0-1, with Delp abstaining.

PLYMOUTH — Robert T. Servis, 77, a resident of River Park, Plymouth died Monday, Jan. 2, 2012 at his home. Service arrangements are incomplete at the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, Plymouth.

Public invited to deployment ceremony

Wednesday, approximately 180 soldiers of the 381st MP Unit from Indiana will be deployed to Afghanistan. About 90 of the soldiers are from northern Indiana, out of the Plymouth National Guard Armory. Members of the Plymouth American Legion, VFW, DAV and Plymouth FOP Lodge 195 are planning a deployment ceremony Wednesday, Jan. 4.

The 30-minute ceremony will be held at the National Guard Armory on West Madison Street at 1 p.m. U.S. Congressman Joe Donnelly, State Representative Nance Dembowski, and Plymouth Mayor Mark Senter will be guest speakers.

Anti-bullying message resounds with many

ROCHESTER — When 21-year-old Mallory Wyatt, of Rochester, decided to make a video last week to encourage young people struggling with being bullied, she never imagined the response she would get.
“I decided I wanted to make a video to show people that they don’t always know what is going on in others' lives, and they shouldn’t make fun of (people),” said Wyatt. “I just thought (people) in Rochester would see it.”

Hoosier Tire Corp. will add 20 jobs as part of 2012 expansion

PLYMOUTH — Hoosier Tire and Rubber Corporation, a long-standing employer in the local area, recently announced that 20 positions would result from their planned expansion in 2012. The company will be incorporating a rubber mixing plant to their existing facility in Plymouth.

PLYMOUTH — “What does every band want?” asks Britney Conway. “Groupies” is the obvious answer, and that is how the name for the popular local cover-band Groupies Wanted came to exist.
It may be said that Josh Ortiz is the heartbeat of this band, as its drummer, but Conway is the creative mastermind behind the catchy name.

WINONA LAKE — Glenna Irene Shuter, 85, of Winona Lake passed away Thursday, Dec. 29, 2011 at 8:13 p.m. at Lutheran Hospital of Fort Wayne.
She was born Dec. 13, 1926 in Plymouth to Glenn Sherer and Dessie (Shadley) Sherer. Sept. 3, 1944 she was married to Virgil Shuter, who preceded her in death in 2005.
Glenna was a 1944 graduate of Aurora High School in Aurora, with a Steno Bookkeeping Civil Service Degree.
She was a self-employed hairdresser for many years retiring in 1988.

PLYMOUTH — Mary Ellen (Workman) Hite-Haag Davis passed away at Miller’s Merry Manor in Plymouth, Dec. 31, 2011 at 11 a.m. She was born in Ober, July 20, 1923. May 1, 1940 she married Raymond Hite; they later were divorced after 26 years.
Mary is survived by four children — John Hite and wife Jean of Hurst, Texas; Sherry Hite of Oakland, Calif.; Rick Hite and wife Janice of Plymouth; and Carl Hite of Rochester; daughter-in-law Joyce Moore of Fort Wayne; nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
