Culver Academies choir/band in concert Sunday at Ancilla

Culver Academies' choir, directed by Stacey Warren, and band and orchestra, directed by Major William Browne and Chad A. Gard will perform their annual Christmas concert Sunday, December 2, at 3 p.m. at Ancilla Domini Chapel, PHJC Ministry Center, in Donaldson, Indiana. The event is free to the public and a reception will follow in Cana Hall.

Firefighters to train at abandoned house

PLYMOUTH — A home scheduled to be demolished is providing a unique opportunity for area firefighters.
The Marshall County Health Department condemned a home at 4170 Lilac Road near Plymouth, according to Jerry Fussell of the Health Department, and rather than just tear it down, it’s been offered to the LaPaz Fire Department to use for training.
“(The house) is in a decaying state,” explained Fussell. “We cannot contact the owner anymore; we have no way to get in contact with them.”

Culver community gathers in prayer to mourn shooting victims

The Culver community gathered Thursday night at a standing-room-only Wesley United Methodist Church on School Street, where an ecumenical, community-wide prayer vigil was held to help students and parents work through their grief.

The vigil was in response to the shooting death on Madison Street of two Culver residents, 44 year-old Michael Price and 16 year-old Stephen Suthard, Wednesday night in an incident still under police investigation.

O-D starts fast in 74-37 LaVille rout

HAMLET — Anyone who missed the first quarter at Oregon-Davis Thursday missed the girls basketball game itself.
The Class A No. 3 Lady Cats ran off 21 unanswered points to open the contest against LaVille, fired in 12 straight to cap off the opening frame, and forced 17 turnovers in the first eight minutes en route to a 74-37 doubling up of the Lancers at The Den.

Bremen swim teams topple Rochester

BREMEN — This year Bremen’s swim teams have shifted their focus a bit in practice.
The Lions are sweating some of the finer details, and the change has already done them some good.
Bremen claimed a pair of wins over visiting Rochester in a boys and girls dual swim meet at home Thursday. The Lions won 98-86, and the Lady Lions were victorious, 97-89.
“We’re focusing more on intensity and endurance this year and a lot more on technique work, and I think it’s paid off for some of them already,” said Bremen head swim coach Meredith Eakins.

Girls basketball
Lady Pilgrims stay perfect
The Lady Pilgrims scored with 51 percent efficiency at a 23-of-45 floor clip while holding Tippy Valley to 36 percent from the field, and Plymouth’s girls basketball team remained unbeaten with a 63-44 win on the road in Akron Thursday.
Amber Redinger tallied a team-high 18 points, while Hunter Stevens finished with 15 points and nine rebounds, Haley Harrell scored 11 points with five assists and four steals in an all-around strong outing, and Lauren Tanner finished with 10 points for the balanced Pilgrims.

Vervynckt named 3rd team Academic All-American

VALPARAISO — Valparaiso junior Todd Vervynckt has been named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America Division I Men’s Soccer Third Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), it was announced Thursday.
The Plymouth alumnus becomes the second Crusader men’s soccer player in the last three years to earn the national academic honor.

PLYMOUTH — Carl A. Alberts Jr., 80, of Plymouth died Nov. 27, 2012 at 11:34 p.m. at Kindred Hospital of Northern Indiana, Mishawaka.
Visitation will be Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012 from 3 to 6 p.m. at Van Gilder Funeral Home; rosary prayer will be at 5 p.m.
Funeral is Monday, Dec. 3, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Michael Catholic Church.
Burial will be at New Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth.
Van Gilder Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

CULVER — George Steven Richie, 65, of Culver passed away at Goshen Health Nov. 20, 2012.
Steve was born to George Ross and Shirley (Lambert) Richie Feb. 26, 1947 in Indianapolis. After graduating high school, he obtained a bachelor’s degree. Aug. 19, 1967 he was married to Constance D. Wand in Indianapolis. 
Steve is survived by his wife Connie of Culver and brother Jerry (Karen) Richie of Indianapolis. He was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter Diane Richie Jordan.

PLYMOUTH — A lifetime Plymouth resident, Elizabeth L. “Betty” Beatty, 81, of Plymouth, passed away at 3:05 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012 in the St. Joseph Regional Medical Center - Mishawaka following a sudden illness.
Betty was born in Mishawaka June 23, 1931. She was the daughter of Clair L. and Ruby H. (Thomas) Gurthet. She graduated from Plymouth High School with the class of 1949 and from Manchester College in 1953. She earned her Master’s Degree in Education from Indiana University in 1957.
