Cross country series opens today

The 2012 Cross Country State Series opens with sectionals today as the Culver Academies host an 11-team field including Plymouth, Culver Community and Triton, while Bremen, John Glenn and LaVille head to the South Bend Riley Sectional, both scheduled to begin around 5 p.m. ET.
Also in the area, Knox, North Judson and Oregon-Davis will travel to the Rensselaer Central tourney slated for 5 p.m. CT, while NorthWood will compete in the Elkhart Central Sectional at 5 p.m. ET

Bremen falls to New Prairie in NSC championship match
The Lady Lions got off to a slow start in a three-game loss, and New Prairie clinched the Northern State Conference championship at Bremen Monday, 25-9, 26-24, 25-17.
Brooke Baker finished with a team-high eight kills with six digs, while Cassie Sears recorded three kills with three blocks, and Chelsea Huppert served an ace with three blocks. Sabrina Gilley finished with 13 assists and six digs, and Brooke Fitch passed out eight digs on defense.

Rylee Shepherd, 4 months, passed away Thursday Oct. 4, 2012 at 8:50 a.m. in his residence. He was born May 8, 2012 to Tara Amor and Brian Shepherd.
He is survived by his parents, a sister Nevah Shepherd of New Haven, maternal grandparents Sue Walters of Nappanee, and Terry Amor of Plymouth, paternal grandparents Shelia Shepherd of Warsaw and Elbert Shepherd of Warsaw, maternal great-grandmother Opal Poe of Warsaw, and paternal grandmother Peggy Amor of Plymouth.

WINAMAC — Lester L. “Bud” Manis, 83, of Winamac died Oct. 5, 2012 at 8 a.m. at his residence.
He is survived by his wife, Deloris J. Brown Manis; daughters, Deborah D. (Bob) Carpenter, Lafayette, Suzanne M. (Tim) Coonrod, Mooresville, Mary Margaret (Jack) Van Lieshout, Evansville; three grandchildren; and three sisters.
No services will be held.
Private burial will take place at McKinley Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Winamac.
The Frain Mortuary, Winamac is handling arrangements.

ETNA GREEN — John Homer Mason, 77, of rural Etna Green, passed away Friday, Oct. 5, 2012 at 7:30 p.m. at Warsaw Meadows Care Center.
John was born Nov. 5, 1934 at Warsaw to LeRoy Mason and Nettie Jordan Mason. He was a resident of the Etna Green and Bourbon area most all his life. John was a veteran and served 20 years in the United States Army. He served in the Korean War and two terms in the Vietnam War. He was a Mess Cook Sergeant. Locally he worked for Orthopedic Equipment Company, Wire flex and at Bourbon Plastics.

Survivors include: three sons, Bryan (Cyndi) Craft Jr. of Knox, Allen (Tammy) Craft of Knox and Tom (Michelle) Craft of Bremen; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Virgil Craft of Winamac and two sisters, Juanita Hensley of Knox and Doris Martin of Plymouth.

WALKERTON — Malachi Luke Palmer, 3, of Walkerton and more recently of Plymouth passed away Monday Oct. 1, 2012 in Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne. Malachi was born Nov. 28, 2008 in South Bend to James Alan Palmer and Josephine Ruth Brady.

IHSAA announces 40th annual sectional football draws

INDIANAPOLIS — All but one area team will open sectional play on the road, the IHSAA announced Sunday as it released its draws for the 40th annual state football tournament.
In the opening round Oct. 19, John Glenn will host Culver Military Academy in a rematch of a Week 6 match-up in Class 3A Sectional 17 play, with the winner advancing to play the winner of Gary Wallace at Mishawaka Marian the following week. Also in the tourney, Knox will travel to South Bend St. Joseph’s, while Hammond Gavit plays at Calumet in the other semifinal bracket.
