OSCEOLA — Fred James Gunther, 52, of Osceola, passed away at 7:40 p.m., Friday, Oct. 5, 2012 in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Mishawaka after a battle with lung cancer. Fred was born Dec. 23, 1959, in Plymouth, the son of Fred H. and Dorothy (Kopetski) Gunther. He graduated from LaVille High School.

Help sought in finding photos of local Vietnam vets

MARSHALL CO. — Seven Marshall County men died in the Vietnam War, and Greenfield resident David Hine wants to make sure they will not be forgotten.
Hine, who is retired from the Air Force, spends between 40 and 50 hours each week trying to locate photos of fallen Vietnam veterans from Indiana.
“This project was started in 2009 by the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund,” explained Hine, “In Indiana, there are still more than 800 men that don’t have photos.”

Boiler issues give Triton day off

BOURBON - The fall chill made it’s way into Triton High School on Monday morning forcing school officials to postpone classes for the day.
“There was no heat at the high school and room temperatures were around 55 degrees,” said Triton Superintendent Donna Burroughs. “I don’t think that would have made for a very good learning environment so we decided to cancel classes for the day.”

3 hosting tourneys as sectional volleyball draws announced

INDIANAPOLIS — A trio of area teams will play host to sectional fields as the 41st Annual IHSAA State Volleyball Tournament opens next Tuesday.
Plymouth will try to build on last year's sectional runner-up finish as the team hosts a seven team Class 3A field at the Rock beginning with the opener between the Lady Pilgrims and Mishawaka Marian Tuesday at 7 p.m. The winner will advance to play Northern State Conference champion New Prairie at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Cross country series opens today

The 2012 Cross Country State Series opens with sectionals today as the Culver Academies host an 11-team field including Plymouth, Culver Community and Triton, while Bremen, John Glenn and LaVille head to the South Bend Riley Sectional, both scheduled to begin around 5 p.m. ET.
Also in the area, Knox, North Judson and Oregon-Davis will travel to the Rensselaer Central tourney slated for 5 p.m. CT, while NorthWood will compete in the Elkhart Central Sectional at 5 p.m. ET

Bremen falls to New Prairie in NSC championship match
The Lady Lions got off to a slow start in a three-game loss, and New Prairie clinched the Northern State Conference championship at Bremen Monday, 25-9, 26-24, 25-17.
Brooke Baker finished with a team-high eight kills with six digs, while Cassie Sears recorded three kills with three blocks, and Chelsea Huppert served an ace with three blocks. Sabrina Gilley finished with 13 assists and six digs, and Brooke Fitch passed out eight digs on defense.
