CULVER — Clara Elizabeth Hansen, 89, of Culver, died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2012 at Hospice House, South Bend.

Clara was born Dec. 16, 1922 in Warsaw to Walter W. and Bessie (Smith) White. Clara married Winferd Carl Hansen Feb. 1, 1942. Clara has been a longstanding member of Culver Lions Club & VFW Ladies Auxiliary. Clara and her husband started Hansen's Restaurant & Sport Shop in 1957.

WALKERTON — Sharon M. Baker, 74, died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2012 at The Center for Hospice & Palliative Care, South Bend.
Also surviving are; one daughter, Carla Carr of Jacksonville, Fla. and one son, Paul Baker of Walkerton.
There will be no services or visitation. Cremation will take place. Memorial contributions may be given to The Center for Hospice & Palliative Care, 111 Sunnybrook Ct., South Bend, IN 46637. ARGOS — Betty Jane Cowen, 86, formerly of Argos, passed away Oct. 22, 2012 at 6:03 a.m. at Rittenhouse Senior Living of Indianapolis following an illness since May, 2012.
She was born Nov. 20, 1925 in Culver to Harry and Isa (Riggs) Young. She was a life-time resident of Marshall County.
March 27, 1964 at the Poplar Grove United Methodist Church in Culver, she married Eldon F. Cowen, who preceded her Feb. 6.
Betty worked at the State Exchange Bank in Culver for more than 20 years and later worked at the Argos Medical Center.

Tutoring program provides aid for Jefferson Elementary students

PLYMOUTH — A new after school tutoring program started this month at Jefferson Elementary School in Plymouth.
Principal Angie Mills said that teachers and administration at the school saw the need for additional reading help for their students, especially those in the third and fourth grade.
“We used testing data from the last several years…we really wanted to target students that needed the most help, and that is third and fourth grade at this point,” said Mills.

Dog deemed dangerous, being held by Humane Society

WALKERTON — Jaide, an 11-month-old rottweiler and bullmastiff mix, was taken from her owner’s home by Walkerton police officers and St. Joseph County Humane Society workers last Friday.
Jaide’s owner, Anthony Hill, said he was not home at the time, did not know his dog would be taken, and arrived home to find his door kicked in and his canine missing.
“They left my house unsecured…I have three kids, including a 3-month-old baby,” said Hill.

Butcher returns to lead Chargers

DONALDSON — Ancilla College has hired Aaron Butcher as the Chargers’ new men’s basketball coach.
Butcher is the first head coach of the men’s basketball team that was once a student-athlete in the Charger program.
“I would like to thank Dr. May, Dr. Blount, and Mr. Gene Reese for the opportunity to lead the men’s basketball program here at Ancilla,” began Butcher. “Having played here, I take great pride in this program. The last three seasons working for Coach Tonagel at Indiana Wesleyan has helped prepare me for this opportunity and I am excited for what’s in store.”

Eggers and Dittmar win Indiana Farm Bureau Tournament Series/ MARCO Bass Masters crown

WINONA LAKE — North Liberty’s Jason Dittmar and teammate Dave Eggers won the Poor Boy’s Bass Attack at Winona Lake, and the victory let them capture the season championship for the . Tournament Series by only one point with 454 points.
On a day when the fish were few and far between as only six teams weighed in a fish, Dittmar’s and Eggers’ four fish weighed 14.90 pounds and was anchored by a 5.39-pound largemouth that took the Travel Tender Bait and Tackle Big Bass Award.
