WALKERTON â Randolph âRandyâ L. Verkler, 65, residing in Walkerton passed away Thursday, Dec. 15, 2011 in Starke Memorial Hospital, Knox. He retired as an operating engineer with Local #150. Randy worked for more than 23 years for the St. Joseph County Highway Department as a supervisor. He also served as a reserve law enforcement officer with the Walkerton and Hamlet Police Departments.

PLYMOUTH â The Plymouth Eagles Lodge 1900 is hard at work contributing to the yearâs state project â raising enough money to buy an ambulance for Riley Hospital for Children.
Since the clubâs fiscal year began in June, it has raised $1,800, which is more than half its goal contribution of $3,000. All of the Eagles clubs in Indiana will raise money for a $250,000 ambulance. Itâs worth the high price tag, however, according to Plymouth Eagles secretary and president of District 4, Brandon VanVactor, who says the ambulance is equipped for surgery mid-transport.
INDIANAPOLIS â Buying a CollegeChoice CD 529 Savings Plan for one of her granddaughters isnât Marilyn Fortinâs only good deed.
Purchasing the certificate of deposit for a granddaughterâs college education automatically entered her into a contest for two free tickets to Sundayâs Indianapolis Colts game against the Tennessee Titans. When CollegeChoice CD called the Plymouth resident to tell her sheâd won tickets, they learned she had knitted or crocheted 11 scarves for the Super Bowl XLVI Super Scarves Project.
Plymouthâs John Ruff put up 12 points â including the game-winner â to go with game-highs of six rebounds, five assists and five steals as Plymouth eked out a 53-52 Northern Lakes Conference win at NorthWood Friday.
Culver sophomore Kayla Shaffer finished with a game-high 15 points as the Lady Cavaliers snapped a four-game skid with a 44-30 Northern State Conference win over visiting Jimtown Saturday.
PLYMOUTH â Sometimes in defeat all you can do is take your lumps and chalk it up to a learning experience.
Such was the case for Plymouth Saturday as the Lady Pilgrims took a rough 55-24 Northern Lakes Conference loss to a skilled NorthWood squad at home at The Rock.
BOURBON â The Triton High School Athletic Department has announced its 2012 Hall of Fame class.
The class of 2012 will be the hallâs second class and will follow the 2011 class of the Bourbon Foundry, Coach Ron Smith, Lorea Feldman, Rich Rhodes, Dan Sharpe and John Yantiss.
The class of 2012 will include four athletes in Joe Berger, Steve Gochenour, Max Trowbridge and Justina Reichert, one coach in Sam Davis and two contributors in Terry and Jackie Alderfer.

For the few in Culver who haven't yet noticed, the Lions Club's community sign -- on Lake Shore Drive adjacent to the depot-train station the club calls home -- has had a major renovation, and is now completely electrical, with "rotating" messages, the date and time, and a much easier method of text-changing for Mike Overmyer, who operates the new technology.

The largest employer in Marshall County is now also a health care provider for its many employees, and Culver Academies Human Resources Director Diane Avery couldnât be happier.
Avery says the genesis of the idea began two years ago, when she read an article about medical practice coming full circle and the rebirth of a popular trend in the 1960s for large organizations to host onsite health clinics for their staff. With todayâs rising health care costs, she says, institutions such as the Academies are seeking ways to keep those costs down.
