Plymouth loses NLC opener with Warsaw

PLYMOUTH — For the second straight game, manageable halftime deficits turned rapidly into insurmountable ones, and the Lady Pilgrims lost their Northern Lakes Conference opener 47-30 to the visiting Tigers at home Saturday.
Plymouth opened the second half on a 4-0 mini run to cut Warsaw’s lead to 19-17 at the 6:35 mark of the third, but the Tigers closed out the frame 14-5 to take a double-digit, 33-22 lead into the final stanza. Seven straight turnovers at the start of the fourth led to 11 unanswered Warsaw points, and the Pilgrims lost their sixth straight.

Academies Christmas concert goes prime time Tuesday with guest vocalist Swindal

Culver Academies’ annual Christmas Concert, usually held in the afternoon during the school day, will be going prime time this year, as well as featuring guest vocalist Haley Swindal, a 2004 alumna.
“Christmas in Culver: A Musical Holiday Celebration” will be performed Tuesday, Dec. 13, at 7:30 p.m. in Eppley Auditorium on the Academies campus. Admission is $10 -- or the equivalent in canned and non-perishable foods. All proceeds will benefit the Marshall County Food Bank.

PLYMOUTH — With Peru’s 2-3 zone not giving up much from the floor, Plymouth needed to get to the line.
The Pilgrims did just that 16 times, knocking down 20 of 30 freebies as they topped a tenacious Tigers team 50-40 at home at The Rock Friday night.

PLYMOUTH — One local athlete knows the true meaning of Christmas.
Ricky Miller — affectionately known as Mr. Snuggles in area Mixed Martial Arts fighting circles — will take on Nate Wac Saturday night as the feature fight on the card at the South Bend Century Center. Miller will donate all of his proceeds from the bout to the Marshall-Starke Development Center.
It is a charity that hits close to home for Miller.

Draws are in for 47th Annual Bi-County Tournaments

LAKEVILLE — The draws for the 47th Annual Teachers Credit Union Bi-County Basketball Tournaments were announced Thursday.
The eight-team varsity tournaments begin Tuesday, January 17 and continue through Saturday, Jan. 21. First-round games will take place at four different sites, while all subsequent rounds will be played at LaVille High School.

Rockies topple Tigers, 54-24

PLYMOUTH — Coming off a disappointing finish at their home wrestling tournament Saturday, the Rockies needed a pick-me-up.
A Northern Lakes Conference win over Warsaw was just what the doctor ordered.
Plymouth recorded eight pinfall victories and won 10 of 14 matches — with one of its four losses coming by forfeit at 120 — to hand the Tigers a convincing 54-24 loss at home at The Rock Thursday.

ARGOS — Mary Elizabeth Heckaman, 87, of 18770 Maple Road, Argos, died Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2011 in Sebring, Fla.
She is survived by two daughters, Sharon (Ed) DeMont of Plymouth, Rosemary (Ron) Cullers of Mexico; a son, Mike (Jan) Heckaman of Argos; a brother, Allen Neff of Sebring, Fla.; eight grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, in the Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester. Visitation is from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday and one hour prior to the service in the funeral home.

ARGOS — Helen Jane Large Shriver, 87, of 20912 Iris Road, Argos, passed away at 7:45 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2011 at her residence.
Jane was born in Fulton County June 5, 1924, the daughter of Emery Vernice and Clovie Annice Stayton Large. Growing up she was one of eight children, sharing her childhood with two sisters Juanita and Susan and five brothers Chester, Odd, Bee, Orville and Sam. With great pride she graduated with the class of 1942 from Leiter’s Ford High School.
