PLYMOUTH â Sometimes youâre just overmatched.
Such was the case for Culver Thursday as it suffered a lopsided 25-8, 25-5, 25-15 loss against a bigger, stronger Plymouth squad on the Lady Pilgrimsâ home floor at The Rock.
âPlymouthâs a good team,â said Culver head volleyball coach Amanda Minix. âWeâve had some pretty light teams here in the first part of the year, and I told them coming into night âThey play hard, they serve hard, they can place serve it,â and we just kind of fell apart.â
Compared to the next three miles she has to travel, getting to South Korea was a breeze for Plymouth native Morgan Uceny.
Because the next three miles â to be run one at a time â are for all the marbles.
Uceny, a 2003 Plymouth High School graduate, begins her quest to win a gold medal in the womenâs 1500-meter run Saturday when preliminary heats kick off the IAAF World Track & Field Championships in Daegu, Korea.
Is she nervous? You betcha.
But is she ready? Oh, yeah.
WARSAW â Â On the road against defending semistate champion Warsaw, Plymouth was already up against a wall.
When a key player was sidelined with an injury in the second half, things went from bad to worse.
With his team already trailing 2-0, Plymouth defensive player Jordan Popi was forced to leave the game with a broken wrist early in the second half, and the Tigers netted four goals between the 47th and 53rd minutes to put the game out of reach and hand the Rockies an eventual 7-0 Northern Lakes Conference-opening loss at Warsaw Thursday.
MISHAWAKA â The Argos girls soccer team opened Northern Indiana Soccer Conference play with a 3-1 road win at Trinity Thursday.
In a shocking start, Jami Patterson and Sammie Hopkins wall-passed the opening kick-off right down the field with Hopkins striking for a goal with 15 seconds elapsed on the clock. It would be hard to imagine a better start for the Dragons, and the visitors continued their solid play, pressing the Titans for the better part of the opening frame.

KNOX â Scott Imus, Executive Director of the Indiana Petroleum Marketers and Convenience Store Association was a special guest speaker at a gas price forum held at the Knox Community Center Thursday night. Imus, who is considered a leading authority in the area of fuel prices, was in Knox as a guest of State Representative Nancy Dembowski, Senator Ed Charbonneau and WKVI radio.
Imus told residents that there were many myths regarding retailers and the profits they make off the price of gasoline.
Culverâs Karen Heim was voted Republican party nominee for town clerk in this Novemberâs election, at the townâs Republican caucus last Thursday.
Following an introduction by Marshall County Republican Chairman Dave Holmes, both Heim and opponent Jeanette Surrisi were given time for brief, pre-vote statements to the audience, which filled the large meeting room of the Culver-Union Township Public Library, where the caucus was held.

BREMEN â Singer Sheryl Crow recently paid a surprise visit to Special Edition, Inc. in Bremen.
âHer manager called about a month ahead of time but wouldnât say who was coming,â said Carey Hines, vice president of Special Edition, Inc.
The star stopped by Special Edition the day of her performance at the Morris Performing Arts Center in South Bend, Aug. 17.

PLYMOUTH â After working furiously up to the last minute before the deadline to complete a proposal for a Main Street grant that could have possibly meant renovations to the old fire house in Plymouth, it was learned that proposals could not be accepted by email. The submission directions, which apparently were not included in the proposal packet, stated that only hard copies would be honored.

PLYMOUTH â Katie Pike, 89, of 328 Conger St., Plymouth, died of natural causes at 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2011, at the home of her daughter after a lengthy illness.
Surviving are daughters, Shirley Conley of Elkhart, Delores Dipert and Sharon Standley, both of Plymouth; sons, James Pike of Plymouth and Rolland Pike of Elkhart; 17 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren.
Visitation is Monday, Aug. 29, 2011, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the House of Prayer, 12450 Plymouth-Goshen Trail, Plymouth, IN 46563.
