Children's book authors visit City Center; raise awareness for a cause

July 26, 2011

PLYMOUTH — How many children have an imaginary friend who is a pig? Authors Chip Gilbertson and Gina Restivo use a pig to tell the inspiring story of a boy who learns to believe in himself in their first book, “Fly, Danny, Fly.” Behind the sweet narrative and colorful illustrations, however, is a real cause.
A portion of the proceeds from the book will go to the Danny Did Foundation, a non-profit founded by Mike and Mariann Stanton of Chicago after their 4-year-old son Danny died in 2009 from Sudden Unexplained Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP).

Corn detassling popular summer job for students

July 25, 2011

PLYMOUTH — The cornfield looked empty, just a mass of stalks bending under the sun’s heat.
A few minutes later, however, a large red tractor became visible over the tops of the corn. Groups of kids, all wearing neon orange hats to shield their face from the sun, jumped off the long arms attached to the tractor, brushing cornstalk remnants off their hands. They were in the middle of a long morning of detassling corn — and it was time for a break.
“(The job) has it’s ups and downs,” said Derrick Lee, one of the detasslers, Thursday. “Especially on days like today. It’s hot!”
