Hastings retires from Argos Elementary

ARGOS — Edie Hastings, recently retired JESSE teacher at Argos Elementary, always knew she wanted to teach, but it wasn’t until college that she decided on special education.
Hastings was working a summer job with the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) in Chicago when she witnessed volunteers working with handicapped children. Hastings knew that was something she wanted to do, and switched her major that fall from elementary education to special education. Hastings retired this spring from teaching after 25 years of teaching through JESSE, at Argos Elementary and six other locations.

Obama, lawmakers to meet again as debt clock ticks

WASHINGTON (AP) — With pressure continuing to build but no breakthroughs in sight, budget bargaining between President Barack Obama and top lawmakers resumes Monday at the White House, with both sides hoping to slash the deficit as the price for permitting the government to borrow more than $2 trillion to pay its bills.

LaVille’s Read wins 5th Marshall County Junior Golf Tour event

PLYMOUTH — LaVille’s Lauren Read won her fifth Marshall County Junior Golf Tour event of the year with a 58 atop the Girls 12-14 division as a total of 71 golfers in eight boys and girls divisions participated at Tri-Way Golf Course Friday.
LaVille’s Zach Gurtner shot a 1-over-par 36 on the front side at Tri-Way on his way to a winning 74 for the Boys 15-16 division championship, and Plymouth’s Amanda McPherron won the Girls 15-17 division with a score of 79, three stokes ahead of the rest of the field.

World taking notice as Uceny tops field at Birmingham

Another big race, another big victory for Plymouth grad Morgan Uceny.
And now, the rest of the world is taking notice.
On Sunday, Uceny clocked 4:05.64 to win the women’s 1500-meter run at a Diamond League track meet in Birmingham, England.
