Senior awarded $40,000 scholarship to Purdue

PLYMOUTH — Emotions were running high as the Purdue Alumni Club filed into a conference room at Plymouth High School last week.
They were waiting to surprise senior Calvin Eads with the Sam Elliott Perkins scholarship: A $10,000 yearly renewable award to Purdue University. The scholarship goes to one Marshall County student each year who is pursuing a degree from Purdue University.

Union-North cancels middle school project

LAKEVILLE — After years of a tug-of-war between patrons of the Union-North United School district who were in favor of building a new $15.4 middle school and those opposed, the matter is now off of the table.
During the meting of the school board May 12, the project was officially dropped with a vote of 3-2. Questions surrounding the proposed project concerning the need and where the money to build and operate a new facility would come from had divided the community following a 1028 pubic hearing Nov. 19, 2007.

Bremen Police dedicate memorial to Swartzlander and Beeson

BREMEN — A small crowd gathered around the flagpole in front of the police department in Bremen Saturday morning. They anxiously awaited the unveiling of a rock commemorating the service of Bremen police officers Tony Swartzlander and Chad Beeson. Both officers were killed —Swartzlander in the line of duty, in 1981 and Beeson while on active duty in 2003 in a car accident.
“This has been a long time coming,” said Sergeant Steve Pittman. “We wanted to do this years ago.”

WOODLAND HILLS, Calif. — Thomas Lee Bridegroom, 29, Woodland Hills, Calif., formerly of Knox, died Saturday, May 7, 2011.
He is survived by his parents, Norman and Martha (Parker) Bridegroom; sister, Kim Butts of North Liberty; and a brother, David Bridegroom of Knox.
Visitation will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. (EST) Monday, May 16 at the M.C. Smith Funeral Home, Knox.
Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 17 at the Memorial Chapel at Culver Academy, Culver.

DONALDSON — James O. Thornburg, 84, a resident of the Maria Center at Ancilla Domini, passed away at 8:53 a.m. Saturday, May 14, 2011, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center – Plymouth Campus, after enduring a chronic illness for many years.

Don was born April 4, 1937 in Starke County, Ind. to Peter and Alma (Lowe) Paul and lived in the area most of his life. March 1, 1957 in Knox, he was married to the former Mabel I. Rice.
