April 19th
PLYMOUTH — Plymouth ace Richie Luva has been working on his control.
The lessons he’s learned paid dividends for the Pilgrims in their Northern Lakes Conference opener Monday as Luva pitched a complete seven-inning shutout, and Plymouth opened conference play with a 4-0 win over visiting Elkhart Memorial at Bill Nixon Field.
ELKHART — Down 4-1 going into the seventh, the Plymouth softball team made a big inning happen when they needed one, scoring four times in the top of the inning to take the lead, then holding off Elkhart Memorial as Marissa Sullivan fanned Tayler Miller in an eight-pitch at bat with the tying run on third for a 5-4 Lady Pilgrims win to open the Northern Lakes Conference season.
Sullivan and Memorial’s Ali Iavagnilio were locked in a scoreless duel until the bottom of the fifth when Lauren Strausberger sent a three-run homer over the center field fence to put the Crimson Chargers on top.

Three Culver area Boy Scouts have been working hard towards a life-changing experience, and they’re hoping the community will support them in their efforts.

The Culver Chamber of Commerce and Kiwanis Club’s annual Top Ten awards banquet marked its 19th year in gala fashion last Tuesday evening at the Pretty Lake United Methodist Church banquet center. As in years past, the top ten graduating seniors from Culver Community High School were not only recognized themselves, but given an opportunity to laud the teachers most influential on their scholastic careers and success, alongside a veritable feast prepared by the ladies of the church.
April 16th
Culver police are once again reminding residents to be wary of their vehicles’ security following a rash of thefts in recent weeks from parked cars, as well as the theft of one vehicle itself.
Culver Chief of Police Wayne Bean notes the thefts were not the results of break-ins, but perpetrators entering unlocked cars. Most thefts, he notes, were stereos, though one vehicle had a laptop stolen.

CULVER — Walkers for the fourth annual Relay For Life of Culver will take their first steps toward a $130,000 goal at 7 p.m. Friday, April 15, at Culver Academies Multi-purpose building (moved from Oliver Field due to weather conditions), located on Academy Road.

LAKEVILE — The Union-North United School Corporation turned to a familiar face to fill its junior-senior high school athletic director opening.
Will Hostrawser, who served as LaVille Jr.-Sr. High School AD during the 2005-06 school year, returned to the position following a unanimous vote at Thursday’s Union-North Board of School Trustees meeting in the LaVille Jr.-Sr. High School media center.

CULVER — Betty J. Banks, 78, of Culver, died at 2:50 p.m. Monday, April 11, 2011 in Culver.
She is survived by a son, Jimmy (Beverly) Banks; daughter, Brenda (Tommy) Gravely; sister, Polly (Robert) Dukes; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Visitation will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, April 15 at Odom Funeral Home, Culver.
Funeral services will take place at 3 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Burial will follow at Leiters Ford IOOF Cemetery.

Jan. 5, 1924 — Jan. 30, 2011
NAUGATUCK, Conn. — Mary E. (Stover) Mallory, 87, of Naugatuck, Conn., died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011, at Waterbury Hospital, after a short illness and courageous fight for life.
She was the wife of Robert W. Mallory.
WALKERTON — For both teams, it was a game to grow on.
Plymouth claimed its first win after a rough start to the season, while John Glenn’s young squad got its first game under its belt as the Lady Pilgrims topped the Falcons 8-2 at Glenn Thursday.
“We generally don’t play very well over here so it was nice to come over here and get a win in Falconland,” said Plymouth head softball coach Ed Kelso. “The girls are staying in there. They’re giving us what they’ve got, and we’re ready for the rest of the season.”
