INDIANAPOLIS â€” While the Triton Trojans came up short in their goal of a second state title and Marshall County teams went 0 for 2 at the IHSAA State Basketball Championships, senior guard Jordan Everett earned himself a nice consolation prize with the 2011 Class A Arthur L. Trester Mental Attitude Award Saturday at Conseco Fieldhouse.
â€śItâ€™s a very prestigious award, and itâ€™s an honor,â€ť said Everett, who is ranked third in his class and plans to study engineering at the University of Louisville next fall.
LAPAZ â€”Â Women's Connection will be hosting a "How Sweet It Is!" banquet Wednesday, April 6 at 11:30 a.m. in the Occasion's Banquet Hall, LaPaz. The cost is $8.50 and includes the meal and program. PLYMOUTH â€” The Delta Theta Tau Sorority will be hosting its fifth annual fundraiser Saturday, April 2 in the Knights of Columbus Hall, Columbus Drive, Plymouth. Doors open for this "Hollywood" Trivia Night at 5:30 p.m. and the game curtain rises at 7 p.m. Teams will work together to answer 100 trivia questions throughout the night. Reserve a "cast" table for $100 (max. 10 players per table). Bring food and snacks. Drinks may be purchased at the Lounge only.
CULVER â€”Â Culver Community Schools Kindergarten Roundup for those students in the Monterey Elementary attendance district will be held Tuesday, April 5 at 6 p.m. in the Monterey Elementary School cafeteria. Roundup for those students in the Culver Elementary attendance district will be held Wednesday, April 6 at 6 p.m. in the Culver Elementary School cafeteria. To be eligible for kindergarten a child must be five years old on or before Aug. 1, 2011. Children do not need to attend this informational meeting for parents.
INDIANAPOLIS â€” Both Class A Triton and Class 3A Culver Military fell short of a state championship at the 101st IHSAA State Basketball finals Saturday at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
The Trojans fell 59-55 in a close battle with Indianapolis Metropolitan, while the Eagles lost to repeat Class 3A champion Washington, 61-46.
PLYMOUTH â€“ Youth football players in Plymouth will have a new league to hone their skills this fall.
The Rockie Youth Football League will begin play this coming season. The league will be run in conjunction with the Plymouth High School football program and will play on Saturdays in the fall. The idea is to operate the league as a â€śfeederâ€ť program for the team.
â€śThe focus is going to be on fundamentals,â€ť said Plymouth head football coach John Barron. â€śWe have some very basic things that we think itâ€™s very important for kids to learn and we want to be there to help out.â€ť
MARION â€” Indiana Wesleyan University womenâ€™s basketball senior forward Elaine Hessel has been honored as a NAIA Division II All-American Second Team selection.
Hessel is a two-time All-American as she was a First Team member in 2009-10.
The 2007 Plymouth grad averaged a team-leading 14.3 points per game while also pulling down 4.1 rebounds for IWU. She finished second in NAIA Division II with a 60.3 shooting percentage and was 13th in free throw shooting at 84.7 percent from the free throw line.

NORTH JUDSON â€” Katherine C. Minix, 46, died Monday, March 21, 2011 in I.U. Health Starke Hospital, Knox
She is survived by her husband Mark Minix; daughter, Katie Minix of North Judson; mother, Mary (Dean Miller) Reynolds of Knox; father, Eugene Farler of North Judson and one brother, Eugene (Diana) Farler of Rochester.
There will be no services or visitation.
Cremation will take place.

True, you canâ€™t talk about the boys basketball programâ€™s recent success â€” the Trojans will make their third appearance at state in four years at Saturdayâ€™s Class A final at Conseco Fieldhouse â€” without mentioning in the same breath the culture of hard work and high expectations that sixth-year head coach Jason Groves has put in place.
