City will get 'greener' with energy savings

PLYMOUTH – The city of Plymouth will become more energy conscious with the creation of a new “Common Cents Fund” and the city’s taxpayers will likely be happy.
The Plymouth Common Council suspended the rules to create the fund passing it on all three readings in one meeting. The fund will make available $200,000 in funds for capital equipment purchases that are part of energy conservation measures.

PLYMOUTH — Darleen E. Xaver, 69, of East La Porte Street, Plymouth, Ind., passed away Thursday, March 24, 2011, at 12:35 p.m. at her home. 
She was born July 15, 1941, in Plymouth, to Albin “Bud” and Edythe (Smith) Wilson. Darleen graduated from West High School and was a former officer of the West High School Alumni. She was married to John Xaver from 1961 to1978.

WALKERTON — Lorraine C. Mercer, 86, passed away Sunday, March 27, 2011 in Miller’s Merry Manor, Walkerton. 
Lorraine Mercer was born May 10, 1924 in Mexico, Mo. to John and Hazel (Lutton) Smith and lived in the area for 49 years, coming from St. Louis, Mo. 
May 30, 1940 in Charleston, Mo. she was married to James A. Mercer who preceded her in death in 1995. She was also preceded in death by her parents and one grandson, Greg Mercer.

CULVER — Adam R. Broeker, 29, of Culver, passed away at 5:42 p.m. March 26, 2011 at his home.
Adam was born to Robert and Lois (Bradley) Broeker July 15, 1981 in South Bend. He was a 2000 graduate of Culver Military Academy. After meeting on a blind date, he was later married to Allysa Tchop, Sept. 23, 2009. She survives.

GROVERTOWN — Helen C. Devine, 51, died Friday, March 25, 2011 in Wintersong Village, Knox. 
She is survived by her son, Peter (Candi) Devine of Argos; mother, Jean Devine of Grovertown; six grandchildren; partner, Rick Papp of Fish Lake; brothers: Bill, Wayne, James and John; and sister, Lorna Cisarik.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Douglas Jay “Smooth” Carter passed away Monday March 21, 2011.
He was born in Plymouth, Ind. Nov. 18,1957. Doug lived in New Orleans, La. and later settled in St. Petersburg, Fla. where he has lived for 25 years. He was a job site foreman for West Tampa Glass for 15 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Marion and Fern Estelle (Keyser) Carter.

Plymouth’s Green giving it another shot at Hope

PLYMOUTH — The first time Marisa Green tore her ACL, she didn’t know if she would play basketball again. The second time it happened, she wasn’t sure she wanted to.
Luckily for Hope College, the 6-foot-1 Plymouth senior changed her mind.
Green has signed on to continue her basketball career with the NCAA Division III Flying Dutchmen based out of Holland, Mich.

Triton’s Yeo among final three IBCA/Pacers-Fever Players of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS — Triton sophomore Clay Yeo, Park Tudor freshman Trevon Bluiett and Washington senior Cody Zeller are the IBCA/Pacers-Fever Players of the Week for the week of March 21-26.
Bluiett and Zeller were named winners after leading their teams to respective Class 2A and Class 3A state championships, while Yeo is a recipient after helping Triton to a Class A runner-up finish. The citation was Zeller’s fourth this season.

Zailey Hess wins age group as Jana’s Gymnastics competes at Indiana USAG state meet

MADISON — Jana’s Gymnastics competed in the Indiana USA Gymnastics State Meet at Madison High School over the weekend and came home with some impressive places. 
Zailey Hess won the All-Around championship in her age group for Jana’s Bronze Team, which earned narrowly missed a team championship by less than half a point to finish runner-up at the meet, while Jana’s Silver Team earned a fifth-place finish in its division.
