Plymouth High School Class of 2009 graduate Alex Starr put up 42 points with 21 rebounds in a pair of wins for Purdue University Calumet last week, including her first career double-double against Judson University Wednesday.

PLYMOUTH — Culver Military Academy won nine of 10 events to continue its streak of championships, while Culver Girls Academy’s short-handed squad took the title in its first-ever venture at the 29th Annual Pilgrim Relays Saturday at Plymouth High School.
Plymouth finished second a second straight year in the boys race, while the Lady Pilgrims’ placed third behind Rochester with just seven swimmers in a relay meet whose format rewards depth. North Judson was fourth in the girls meet, meanwhile.

Culver councilman alleges wind turbine photos mislead - owner defends

A few weeks ago, Culver resident Hank Bilsland defended photographs he’d commissioned of wind turbines placed at Lake Winnebago in Wisconsin following a suggestion by Culver town council member Ralph Winters that the photos could have been digitally enhanced to give the turbines a more ominous appearance. At last week’s regular town council meeting, Winters revisited the debate with a set of photographs he’d taken himself at the same site, accompanied by wife Barbara on what he called a “road trip” the two recent undertook to the Wisconsin site.

Plymouth moves to 2-0 vs Rochester

PLYMOUTH — Plymouth turned up the tempo in the third quarter, and the Pilgrims ran away with the win in a 47-26 victory over Rochester Friday.
An 11-8 second quarter by the Zebras knotted the score at 15-all at the half, but Plymouth cranked up its intensity on the defensive end while showing greater patience in the offensive halfcourt to outscore the visitors 18-3 in the third frame and take a 34-18 advantage into the fourth period. The Pilgrims gapped the Zebras by 20 with 4:44 to go and coasted to the win at home at The Rock.

Lions lose opener with Goshen, 62-51

BREMEN — Bremen’s boys basketball team dug just too big of a hole in its season opener against Goshen Friday night.
After falling behind by 16 points midway through the third frame, the Lions twice pulled within seven points, but the visiting Redskins answered each charge and knocked off Bremen 62-51.

United Way striving for goal

PLYMOUTH — United Way of Marshall County volunteers and board members prepared for a blitz in Plymouth Friday. The goal for this year's campaign is $475,000, of which only 30 percent has been received.
"We are looking for (donors) to step up because our member agencies are depending on us having a successful campaign," said Chad Dreibelbis, campaign chair.

VALPARAISO — Cathy Ann Roseberry, 62, of Valparaiso,
passed away Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2011, at the VNA
Hospice Center. She was born May 23, 1949, in Plymouth,
to Henry E. and Mildred E. (Heidel) Sahlhoff and graduated
from Plymouth High School in 1967. Cathy had been a purchasing
agent with Rexam Beverage Can Company for 37
years through many transitions. She was a member of St.
John’s Lutheran Church in Wanatah where she served as
organist for more than four decades. Through all the years

PLYMOUTH — Charles Duane Johnson, 79, of Douglas
Drive, Plymouth, passed away at 1:30
p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2011 in the
St. Joseph Regional Medical Center,
Mishawaka following a brief illness. A
lifetime member of the Plymouth community,
he was known to many as Charlie.
He was born the son of Luther S. and
Lila A. (Larsen) Johnson in Plymouth
Nov. 30, 1932. Charlie graduated from
West High School in 1950. He then
served in the U. S. Army from 1953-1955
in Korea.
Oct. 20, 1957 in Knox he took as his bride, the former

Nov. 7, 1935-Nov. 29, 2011
PERU — Susan Dorthea (Schaefer) Birk, 76, of Peru,
died at 2:45 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2011 at IU Med Center
in Indianapolis. She had been ill for the past year. She was
born Nov. 7, 1935 in Fort Wayne to Louis F and Evelyn
(Burdue) Schaefer. She graduated from LaPaz High School
in 1953 and was married to Ralph E. Birk Aug. 1, 1954. He
preceded her in death Dec. 27, 2008.
Susan and Ralph built their own home in Plymouth,
where they resided from the time of their marriage until
