Plymouth native Starr to return for book signing

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio — Things don’t always go as planned. That doesn’t mean they don’t turn out pretty good in the end.
That is the odyssey of 1984 Plymouth High School graduate Matt Starr. A standout athlete at Plymouth, he attended Manchester College and received a master's degree from Kent State.
He appeared headed for a long and distinguished career as a sports psychologist, with an appointment to work at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.

New pro takes over at PCC

PLYMOUTH — There’s a new level of excitement at the Plymouth Country Club as it welcomes a new golf professional to the club: 47-year-old PGA recognized golfer Timothy Burkhart.
Burkhart, originally from Hornell, N.Y., chose Plymouth because he thought it was a great place for him and his family.
Burkhart, who comes to Plymouth from the Boonville Country Club, has even been featured in PGA magazine.
“It was a huge compliment to be honored by PGA,” said Burkhart.

Help for autism

PLYMOUTH — This past week, a story debunking the work of a prominent medical researcher, Andrew Wakefield, who claimed that childhood vaccinations caused autism, made the rounds.
In 1988, a publication, The Lancet, a medical journal, claimed that Wakefield and his colleagues had linked measles-mumps-rubella vaccine with autism in most of a dozen children they had studied.
Mika Adams, Zionsville, an autism consultant, is the daughter of Plymouth’s Willie Resler.
Adams said numerous studies have shown that there is no correlation between the vaccines and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

KEWANNA — Martha Ann Cook, 83, of Kewanna, passed away at 9 p.m., Friday, Jan. 7, 2011 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Plymouth.
Born Dec. 12, 1927 in Kewanna, she was the daughter of the late Guy Ernest and Jessie Bell (Lisey) Urbin. March 13, 1946 she married Kenneth H. Cook and he preceded her in death May 22, 2005.
She was a 1945 Kewanna High School graduate.

James Spiegel

PLYMOUTH — James D. Spiegel, 77, of Lincoln Highway, Plymouth, passed away Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011, at his home, at 3:22 a.m.
James was born April 11, 1933, in Pierceton, to Arthur and Violet (Weaver) Spiegel. James and Judy Boggs were married March 13, 1974. They had been married for 36 years. James served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He retired from Sprint, after working for 39 years.

BREMEN — Kenneth W. Carter, 71, of Bremen, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011 at Sanctuary at Holy Cross, South Bend.
He is survived by a son, Don Skiles of Osceola; brother, Roy (Nina) Carter of Mishawaka; sisters, Mary (Truman) Merriman of Goreville, Ill., and Bess (Jim) McKenzie of Bremen; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11 at Mishler Funeral Home, 2030 S.R. 331, Bremen.
Funeral services will take place at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12 at the funeral home.

Paula Sue Morris

CULVER — Paula Sue Morris, 47, a Marshall County resident all of her life, died unexpectedly from natural causes at 7:08 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2011 in Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth.
The daughter of Guy and Jean Masterson Flosenzier, Paula was born Sept. 13, 1963, in Plymouth. A 1982 graduate of Plymouth High School, she had also attended Ancilla College.
Paula married Michael Morris and they were blessed with a son, Richard Morris. Paula and Mike were later divorced. Mike preceded Paula in death Nov. 19, 2005.

PLYMOUTH — Rose F. Copeland, 94, of King Road, Plymouth, passed away at 8:47 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2011, at Miller’s Merry Manor, in Plymouth.
Rose was born Sept. 5, 1916, in Holsopple, Penn., to Sebastain and Concetta (Codispodi) Britz. Rose and Frank J. Campiti were united in marriage in 1948. Frank passed away in 1962. In 1965 Rose and Paul Copeland were married. Paul then passed away in 2007. Rose had worked at the Corey Rubber Company, in Marion, Ohio, and then at Marion General Hospital, as a Physical Therapist.

NAPPANEE — Frank B. Method, 85, of Goshen, formerly of Nappanee, died at 11:45 a.m., Jan. 7, 2011 at Greencroft Nursing Center.
He is survived by a son, Richard (Kay) Method of Nappanee; three grandsons; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Eloise (Vern) Meeks of Nappanee; and twin sister, Bertha Parker of Nappanee.
Visitation will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 10 at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, 950 N. Main St., Nappanee.
Funeral services will take place at 3 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Arts Council will enter second year

PLYMOUTH — The Plymouth Arts Council will enter just its second year of operation with an election of officers on Saturday, but the group has made a significant impact in a very short amount of time.
