Jimmies rally past Glenn
Charles Dreesen kicked a 31-yard field goal with just 5 seconds remaining before halftime, and the Falcons held Jimtown scoreless for three quarters, but the Jimmies scored twice in the fourth frame, and John Glenn fell 14-3 in its Northern State Conference opener at Jimtown Friday.
The Falcons managed only 94 net rushing yards and only 206 total offensive yards at the game. Josh Anderson led the Falcons in rushing with 84 yards in 20 carries, while Collin Howard had 23 yards in 14 rushes.

Rockies 'D' doesn't rest

August 28, 2010

ROCHESTER — You know it’s likely to be a good night when your defense can score touchdowns. Plymouth’s Rockies got two scores from their defense, on the way to a 48-7 win over Rochester in their first road test of the new season.
Plymouth got a 37-yard interception return for six from Brock Smith in the third quarter, but the big rumble was a 20-yard strip and score from defensive tackle Damon Howe almost before the fans had settled into their chairs. Howe stripped the ball from Zebra running back Nate Basham’s arms and without breaking stride took it to the house.

Fast start paves way for Lancers

August 28, 2010

LAKEVILLE — LaVille football head coach Brian Stultz and his staff spied something while watching Lake Station game film.
The Lancers converted that discovery into a 63-yard play action touchdown strike from quarterback Rod Bettcher to wide receiver Codee Kimbel on the night's first play from scrimmage, setting the stage for a not-as-close-as-the-score-looks 41-18 win over the visiting Eagles at Lancer Field Friday.

Shorthanded Culver makes due in win

August 28, 2010

CULVER — With three fullbacks sidelined with injuries, Culver Community had to improvise.
When the Cavaliers couldn't seem to move the ball on the ground, sophomore quarterback Collin Stevens took to the air, connecting with receivers at a 10-for-19 rate with two touchdowns and a pick.
South Central had a chance to tie it up after an 8-yard touchdown plunge by Devin Wiltse with 2:10 remaining on the game clock, but the Satellites' two-point conversion gamble on a flea-flicker play failed, and the home team survived 21-20 at Culver Friday.

Country music star Tillis talks music

August 27, 2010

She has filled huge stadiums and played in smoky rooms but for country superstar Pam Tillis it has always been about the music.
“I try to conduct myself with as much integrity as I can,” she said by phone from her home in Nashville. “I put my heart into it.”
Tillis will put her heart into it in Plymouth this Labor Day weekend as the headliner for the Blueberry Festival’s Main Stage. While she says there is a real energy and excitement about the big crowds, the smaller shows have their own special appeal.

Argos schools adjusting to change for safety

August 27, 2010

ARGOS — A new policy to make Argos schools more secure for students went into effect this week and so far it’s been smooth sailing.
Last week Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Lucht announced to parents that beginning on Aug. 23 the doors to the elementary and secondary school would be locked during the school day — from 8:15 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. — to provide a more secure environment for students.

Lower utility costs the plan for Plymouth

August 27, 2010

PLYMOUTH — The Plymouth School Corporation could be paying approximately $500,000 less for utilities for 2010 than in previous years.
Superintendent Dan Tyree said they needed to find ways to cut the school’s budget when the state made major cuts to the schools’ general fund this year and last.
Tyree gives much of the credit for the decrease in utility costs to Maintenance Director Dave Schoof. Schoof has been in the director’s position for the last 18 months and has been in the maintenance department for five years.
