BOURBON â After a pair of close contests last year, both Tritonâs and Culverâs head coaches knew Friday nightâs Northern State Conference kickoff at Triton was going to be a battle.
The game delivered as billed, but Michael Salary returned to power the Cavaliersâ running game, Culverâs defense delivered in the clutch, and in the end the visitors took a closer-than-the-final-score 21-13 victory over the host Trojans.
The Blueberry Festival carnival area opened Thursday night, allowing kids of all ages to get a head start on spins and thrills for the weekend, before the official opening of the entire festival today.

PLYMOUTH â The Ply-mouth School Board unanimously â and enthusiastically â approved Rusty Nixon as the first Director of Development and Alumni Affairs for the Plymouth School Corporation.
The position is being funded for the first year by a private donation from a local businessman with the anticipation that the position will be sustained through memberships in a newly formed Alumni Association.
CULVER â State environmental officials met with mint farmers Wednesday to discuss permits and dumping of hot water into ditches.
Operators of mint stills, about 10 farmers and mint industry representatives spent several hours meeting at the Culver-Union Township Public Library with two officials from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM).

MONTEREY â Dorothy V. Mahler, 88, of Monterey, died at 7:41 p.m. Aug. 31, 2010 at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth.
She is survived by a son, Greg Mahler of Monterey; daughters, Paulette (Richard) Hanna of Plymouth and Ginger (Keith) Shirley of Albuquerque, N.M.; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Visitation will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 3 (EDT) at Odom Funeral Home, Culver.
Funeral services will take place at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 4 at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Riverside Memorial Cemetery, Monterey.

KNOX â James E. Dilts Jr., 89, died Thursday, Sept. 2, 2010 in his home.Â
He is survived by daughters: Carol McGrew, Dawn McGrew and Debi (Michael) Bailey, all of Knox; one son, Dennis (Rose) McGrew of Plymouth; three grandchildren; two sisters, Irene Harrell of Hamlet and Fern Bane of Kentucky; and one brother, William Dilts of Knox.Â
Visitation will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. (CST) Saturday, Sept. 4 at Rannells Funeral Home, Hamlet Chapel.
