PLYMOUTH — Lifetime Plymouth resident Ralph E. Schaal, 87, of Briarwood Avenue, died unexpectedly of natural causes Monday Aug. 30, 2010 at 9:48 a.m. in the St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth.
Ralph was born the son of Ralph Cleo and Fern (Kanarr) Schaal in Plymouth Nov. 22, 1922.
He was a 1941 graduate from LaPaz High School.
June 16, 1945 he took Rula June McCan as his wife in Plymouth. This past June they celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary together.

David R. Town

ELBURN, Ill. — David R. Town, 52, of Elburn, Ill., passed away Aug. 25, 2010 in his home after a two-year battle with cancer.
Dave was married May 30, 1992 in St. Charles to Donna McLaughlin Town who survives. Other survivors include his parents, Bob and Dorothy Town of Bluffton, Ohio, formerly of Argos; sisters Lorie Osinski of Glen Arbor, Mich., Robin (Paul) Miller and Rhonda (Chris) Wrenger of Bluffton, Ohio; several nieces and nephews; aunts, Lena Coplen of Bourbon, Mary (Stan) Wilhelm of Argos; and an uncle, Bill (Lu) Town of Bremen.

KOONTZ LAKE — Francis Christopher "Chris" Irwin, 52, passed away Saturday, Aug. 28, 2010 in Lutheran Hospital, Ft. Wayne. 
Chris was born Dec. 25, 1957 in Chicago, Ill. to Francis X. and Margaret M. (Quebbeman) Irwin and lived at Koontz Lake since 1974, coming from Chicago. 

Janet Barenie

DONALDSON — Janet Barenie, 80, died of natural causes at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 29, 2010, in the Catherine Kasper Home.
Born in Hebron, Ind. May 29, 1930, she was the daughter of Oliver and Gertrude Gilson Berdine.
April 30, 1948 she took Alfred “Chuck” Barenie as her husband; he preceded her in death Nov. 8, 1989.
Janet worked for the Poor Hand Maids of Jesus Christ of Ancilla Domini assisting her husband the poultry farm manager, and later worked as their receptionist.

Blueberry ready

Hayden Wolfe, Tim Gomez, Cody Langdon and Cody Benjamin work hard at securing rope to guide parking cars at Plymouth High School for this weekend’s Blueberry Festival. Money made from parking is a major fundraiser for school extra curricular clubs and sports.
Carnival rides begin Thursday, while the festival kicks off Friday night and ends Monday evening.

Local nursery brings home Christmas tree prize

HAMLET — They must have something in the soil to the west.
Hensler Nursery’s of Hamlet took two of their Christmas trees to the Indiana State Fair this month and came home batting 1.000. An eight foot White Pine entered in the contest took home a Grand Champion prize and a seven foot Frazer Fir was named reserve champion. Each brought home blue ribbons.

Lancers earn moral victory in loss

LAKEVILLE — LaVille might have come up short of the win, but the Lady Lancers still walked off the court with something of a moral victory Monday.
After falling behind two games to visiting Goshen, the Lancers refused to surrender in the final game, running out the game 10-10 but still losing a prolonged 30-28 battle in a 25-21, 25-15, 30-28 loss at home.
“I love their effort. I’m not really disappointed when they lose when they play like they did,” said LaVille head coach Leslie-ann Bloss. “They’ve come a long way from where they were in the beginning of the season."

Dragons fall in OT

ARGOS — After a tentative 1-0 win over LaPorte in the first round of the Argos girls soccer invitational, the Argos girls soccer team looked to face stiffer competition in Munster. The Mustangs handled LaVille 3-0 in their semifinal and returned 10 seniors from last year’s semi-state squad. The Dragons, however, stepped up to the challenge before falling 2-1 in overtime.

Plymouth volleyball tourney

Plymouth finished its home volleyball tournament 0-3 as Muncie Burris won the championship Saturday.
Haley Smart led the Lady Pilgrims with 23 total kills for the tournament, while Meagan Barron had 49 assists. Lindsay Renz recorded 16 digs overall as Plymouth slid to 3-5 on the season.
