PLYMOUTH â€” Itâ€™s easy to see why Maria Gonzalezâ€™ classmates love her.
The little girl who loves to read and play board games with her family will be fighting a brain tumor for the second time in her young life. That fight has brought an outpouring of support from her friends and teachers at Plymouthâ€™s Riverside Intermediate School. The wave of support is now spreading.
In a week of activities designed to help Maria and her family as they face radiation treatments at Indiana University Hospital in Bloomington, Riverside alone was able to raise over $2,000.
PLYMOUTH â€” The theme of the 2010 4-H Leader appreciation program, â€śVolunteers Leading the Wayâ€ť could not have been more fitting.
Although not all of the leaders being recognized were able to attend the program held Tuesday night, 263 names of volunteers appeared in the program. Of those, one-fourth has been volunteering as leaders for 20 years or more.
PLYMOUTH â€” Sheâ€™s been an extra â€śmomâ€ť for a lot of young Plymouth Rockies over the years and now sheâ€™s in a battle all her own.
Shelly McKee â€” whose husband Joe is a longtime coach in the Marshall County Junior Football League â€” felt pressure in her stomach while running on a treadmill one day during the summer. A few weeks later, a visit to the doctor for a sinus infection lead to the discovery of stage two ovarian cancer.

PLYMOUTH â€” City firefighters had a busy day Tuesday responding to two house fires before many in the city had finished their second cup of coffee.
Firefighters responded to their first fire of the day around 3:18 a.m. at 420 Miner St. in Plymouth. They were at the site for around two hours in the early morning with no injuries reported.

SARASOTA, Fla. â€” Ilo E. Swick, 94, of Sarasota, Fla., died at 1:30 a.m., Monday, Oct. 11, 2010 at Arden Courts, Sarasota.
She was born to Harley R. and Minnie (Mattix) Regenos Nov. 5, 1915 in Claypool. She married Allen L. Swick Dec. 20, 1942 in Akron. He preceded her in death Dec. 27, 1998.
Ilo was a second grade teacher for 40 years in Plymouth and South Bend and has lived in Florida since 1976. She was a member of the Emmanuel United Methodist Church, Bradenton, Fla.

CULVER â€” Richard Lee Fisher, 89, of Culver, formerly of the Indianapolis area, passed away Oct. 8, 2010 at 11:30 p.m. at Saint Josephâ€™s Regional Medical Center, Plymouth.
Richard was born in Morehouse, Mo. Feb. 27, 1921. He was raised in Morehouse and spent summers on Lake Maxinkuckee. His grandmother was among the first settlers on Long Point.

BREMEN â€”Â Peggy Bradford, 81, of Bremen, died Sunday, Oct. 10, at her residence.
She is survived by her husband, Lester Bradford of Bremen; son, Mike (Jacque) Bradford of Indianapolis; daughter, Debby (Mike) Bradley of Bremen; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Faye Scott of Bremen.
Visitation will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13 at Mishler Funeral Home, 2030 S.R. 331 Bremen.
CULVER â€“ Culver Academies, Plymouth, and Triton cross country coaches each think their runners are capable of quicker times.
Thanks to their respective squadsâ€™ performances at the Culver Academies Cross Country Sectional Tuesday, those skippers can put those hypotheses to the test.
The Eagles pulled off their third consecutive boys-girls title sweep â€“ the boys by a scant two points â€“ while Plymouth and Triton also transferred both boys and girls clubs to Saturdayâ€™s regional meet, also at Culver.

Plymouth missed a penalty kick less than 3 minutes in and it nearly came back to haunt the Rockies.
Up 2-0 after goals by Kendra Reininga â€” her first of the season and Plymouth's first Tuesday in the 20th minute â€” and Krista Vanlue, Culver striker Whitney Sanders beat out a pair of Plymouth defenders for a solo goal in the 48th minute to cut the score to 2-1.
ARGOS â€” Argos started finishing its shots, while Bremen suddenly struggled to do the same, and Plymouth flooded the box and held off Culver's Whitney Sanders as the Lady Dragons and the Rockies both advanced to set up a classic rivalry match-up at the Argos Girls Soccer Sectional Thursday.
ARGOS 2, BREMEN 0
After a number of good runs, Jami Patterson broke through for her eighth goal of the season on a Samantha Hopkins cross through the box with under 2 minutes remaining in the first half to give the Dragons a 1-0 halftime lead and the momentum going into the second half.
